Organic vs Natural: What's the Difference?
Organic food has become increasingly popular recently, with many people switching from conventionally grown food to organic food. The organic food industry is marketed as a healthier and more natural option, but is it?
One of the main arguments for organic food is that it is not genetically modified. However, genetic modification is a natural process used by farmers for thousands of years. Genetic modification is simply a more advanced form of this process.
In addition, many crops grown organically are bred selectively to produce higher yields and resist disease. This selective breeding has led to crops that are very different from their wild ancestors and are not necessarily more natural.
Transport and Storage
Organic food is often transported long distances and stored for extended periods. This can lead to a significant amount of food waste and a loss of nutrients. In addition, the use of refrigeration and other preservation methods is not necessarily natural.
Have you ever wondered why fruits and vegetables from the countryside taste better than organic food in the cityside?
Mainly because they contain more of everything we consider flavour. The flavour is a byproduct of natural sugars, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other phytochemicals.
Phytochemicals are non-nutritive plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables. They are responsible for the colour, flavour, and aroma of fruits. Phytochemicals are beneficial to health because they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Antioxidants protect the body from damage caused by free radicals that cause chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Anti-inflammatory compounds reduce inflammation in the body, which can also contribute to the development of chronic diseases.
Phytochemicals also defend plants against predators and pathogens. Isn’t that crazy? Something plants developed as a toxin for other species became an evolutionary tool for us to progress our species!
So, what’s better than organic? Obviously - natural! It’s not like humans will know better than nature about growing fruits!
